We will be discussing some of its new features that are available with Visual Studio 2010:

MultiTouch: Microsoft Windows 7 OS brings latest multi touch capabilities, and WPF 4 does a great job in using those multi touch capabilities via its own code. Multiple finger input is exposed through existing and new input events, and manipulation and inertia events will be exposed for developers.

Windows 7 Shell Integration: Now developers can use Windows 7 shell features to create WPF 4 applications. Following are some of the components that can be used in WPF 4 code, Taskbar, Aero thumbnails etc. We can now use some OS specific dialog boxes and also can customize them using FileDialogCustomPlace.

Text Enhancement: WPF 4 includes new text rendering, which enables much lighter and clearer test rendering. This improvement will enable WPF text to appear almost same as traditional GDI rendered text.

Following programs are supported under Microsoft Office Language Interface Pack 2010:

• Microsoft Office Excel 2010
• Microsoft Office OneNote 2010
• Microsoft Office Outlook 2010
• Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010
• Microsoft Office Word 2010

e.g for listing of checked out file by specific user and workspace execute the following commmand:

TF status /server:<SERVERNAME> /workspace: <WORKSPACE NAME>;<USER ID>

for getting all checked out files on a server execute the following command:

TF status /server:<SERVERNAME> /workspace:*

This is a big issue in Team Foundation Server (TFS), how to get rid of this? Sometime users(system crash, different domain, or users that are not in Active directoy) forget to CheckIn files that were cehecked out by them exclusively.

The only solution to this problem is to restore the version that was Checked In at the last. and for doing that we need to remove/delete the workspace in which the file  was checked out.

Following are the steps for deletion of a workspace:

• Go to Visual studio command prompt and type “tf workspaces”. This will show all the workspaces on that server. (you can also check workspaces by server, owner etc.)
  • If the user is present in Active Directory then execute the following command:                                 tf workspace /delete /server:http://tfs-server:8080 “Nauman-WorkSpace;Nauman”
• this will remove the Workspace named: Nauman-WorkSpace, that is owner by user:Nauman on Server: http://tfs-server:8080

If user is not present in Active Directory that we need to take another route because above method will return an error: TF50605: There was an error looking up the SID for Nauman.

At this point, we need to open up the TfsVersionControl table and manually point the workspaces to a valid identity. The first stage is to identify the ID of the missing account:

SELECT IdentityId FROM tfsVersionControl.tbl_Identity WHERE (DisplayName LIKE ‘Nauman’

Now that we have the ID, we can locate the workspaces the owner has on the server we’re having problems with.

SELECT WorkspaceId, OwnerId, WorkspaceName FROM tfsVersionControl.tbl_Workspace 

WHERE (OwnerId = 58) AND (Computer = 'Server1')

Now you should update the tfsVersionControl.tbl_Workspace table with a valid IdentityId from the tfsVersionControl.tbl_Identity table

Once updated use the following command again with the updated identity user and now it will work: tf workspace /delete /server:http://tfs-server:8080 “Nauman-WorkSpace;Nauman”

Now previous version of file is available for checking in/out.

Solution:

While installing TFS 2008 on new server, when wizard prompts you to input SQL server instance for storing data, you can point to database containing TFS 2005 data, this would cause the TFS 2008 installation wizard to perform a data upgrade during installation which would allow TFS 2005 database to work properly with 2008.

Please make sure you have properly backed up your existing database prior to installing TFS 2008, this is because during installation procedure it will do some schema changes on existing database that cannot be rolled back. A proper backup will be necessary for recovery of databases incase of failure of installation.

Following are some steps to follow, all unsigned/third party themes to work properly.

1. In order to use custom themes and MSStyles on your computer you need to patch up your Uxtheme.dll file. Otherwise you can only use signed themes  that are created by Microsoft.

The appropriate Uxtheme.dll file

If you are running Service Pack 1 then get this file.

If you are running Service Pack 2 then get this file.

Unzip the file, and execute it. Now you have successfully patched your Uxtheme.dll file.

2. Now download any custom theme file and paste it in the following directory: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes
3. Now through properties windows change your theme and enjoy a great look of your XP interface.

TFS Integration Platform recently released Migration Guidance Document at codePlex. This document introduces some of the migration technologies, takes you through a number of common migration scenarios and associated guidance and covers a number of common questions and answers we have encountered to date.

TFS Integration Platform (installer)

If you want to start building adapters, you will also need the installable TFS Integration Platform (installer). This release contains the binaries for the platform as well as the TFS adapters. This is the Alpha release of the installer for the TFS Integration Platform, including the TFS Adapters.

There is a simple solution for this issue, provided through a command line tool of VS 2008. Open Visual Studio command prompt and use tf.exe application.

All checked out files in $/ProjectTemp:

tf.exe status $/ProjectTemp/user:* /s:http://TfsInstance:8080 /recursive

All files checked out to Nauman:

tf.exe status /user:Nauman /s:http://TfsInstance:8080

Microsoft has changed User Access control features a little bit in Windows 7, and now it is some what better than its previous version of windows vista. Windows 7 UAC has options to set the level of different alerts and notification, much similar of defining security in Internet Explorer.

Easiest method to disable or turn off alerts and notifications for UAC is to going to Control Panel in User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> User Account Control Setting

Move the slider to "Never Notify" to turn off UAC alert and notifications, and then reboot the system.
